Sunday Follies

Oops. This little guy was playing with his mom’s phone and inadvertently ordered $1700 worth of furniture.

From an article at yahoo.com, edited by yours truly: A Long Island grandma outsmarted a group of scammers. A man called pretending to be her grandson, claiming he needed $8000 in bail money. She said she had the money at home and told him to come get it, then she called the police. A man impersonating a bail bondsman arrived and she handed him an envelope filled with paper towels. As he turned to leave, he was tackled by cops. No word on if he ratted out his cohorts. Kudos, Gram.

As everyone knows, there aren’t enough lawsuits in America. Here’s another, from an article by Tyler McCarthy at foxnews.com, in my own words: Two fans of Ana de Armas are suing Universal Studios because she was cut out of the final release of Yesterday (2019), which I haven’t seen. After seeing her in the trailer, they rented the flick from Netflix, paying $3.99. They accuse Universal of deceptive marketing. The duo is seeking $5 million on behalf of themselves and all other affected consumers. Will there be a separate “pain and suffering” settlement? If they win, will the two share the money with others who suffered the same trauma?

Born in Havana in 1988, de Armas moved to Spain at 19, then made the gutsy move to L.A., not speaking English. She immersed herself in the language and roles began coming her way, most notably Blade Runner 2049 (2017). Last year she became a Bond girl in No Time to Die (2021). She has four projects soon to be released. It seems the sky’s the limit.

Everything worked out perfectly today for the floating book shop except the business aspect. A parking spot opened almost immediately, and the unfettered sunshine provided the warmth to allow me to spend the entire session out of the car. My thanks to the gentleman who bought a book in Russian, and to Bill, author of Words and Guitar: A History of Lou Reed’s Music and other fine books, who purchased a Stan Lee bio. He’d purchased a book on Coney Island yesterday.
