What to make of Syria now that Assad is out and Islamic militants are in? Maybe Bibi knows, headline from foxnews.com: “Netanyahu hails ‘historic’ fall of Assad in Syria, credits attacks on Hezbollah.”

Last night the Midnight Theater program, airing on PBS affiliate 21–4 on OTA in NYC, ran Don’t Look in the Basement (1973), a title vague in my memory. I recognized none of the actors, although a few had decent careers. In researching it at IMDb, I was intrigued most by the director, S.F. Brownrigg, his real name, though it sounds invented. Born in Arkansas, he served in the Army as a combat photographer and worked on numerous military training films during his tour of duty. He met regional filmmaker Larry Buchanan in ’55 and teamed with him on several movies, the most notable It’s Alive! (1974), the one about a killer infant. He helmed five films in all. Here are the titles of his other four: Don’t Hang Up (1974), Scum of the Earth (1974), the highest rated at 5.3 on a scale of ten; Keep My Grave Open (1977); Thinkin’ Big (1986), a comedy, his lowest rated effort, 3.6. My intention is not denigration. He got a lot farther than ninety-something-percent of folks. He should be celebrated as a dreamer, his path reminiscent of the more celebrated Ed Wood. After his film career came to an end, he worked in TV, doing golf and hunting and fishing shows for ESPN. A father of three, he passed away at 58 in ’96. Photo from Google Images:

It was a mild but windy day, fine for a December session of the Anti-Inflation Book Shop. My thanks to the gentleman who bought a DVD in Russian, the only sale. Fortunately, there was no incoming. Crazy, but I’m already looking forward to tomorrow’s session.
