Surprises
I prefer crime dramas that are dark rather than amusing, so I’m completely surprised to be swept up in a French production that translates as Agatha Christie’s Little Murders, which airs on PBS affiliate WNDT, Channel 14–1 on over the air antennas in NYC. I’ve read only one of Christie’s novels and don’t recall which or anything about it. What makes the series in question work so well despite its silliness is the female regulars, and the witty dialogue. Elodie Frenck is utterly charming as a ditsy secretary, and Blandine Bellavoir vivacious as a spunky reporter Lou Grant would have hated as much as the inspector does. Natacha Lindinger is smoking hot as the forensic expert who engages in repartee laced with innuendo with the sexist chief, played by the debonair, middle age Samuel Labarthe. She appears in only five of the 29 episodes shot so far. All three ladies have a lot of credits in French TV. Here’s a shot of Frenck and Bellavoir in character, followed by one of Lindinger. Ooh la la:
Here’s a big surprise. An op-ed piece about Trump/Russia collusion in the liberal Washington Post by contributing editor Gary Abernethy falls under the headline: “Admit It: Fox News Has Been Right All Along.” Will any other organizations in the mainstream media admit this? Of course, and they’ll apologize too — not!
As I said yesterday, hockey is so different from other pro sports. The Tampa Bay Lightning tied the record for most wins in a season, 62, and had the fourth-most points ever. Pundits were dubbing them one of the greatest teams ever assembled — without a single championship on the current group’s ledger. Those who engaged in the hyperbole are looking mighty foolish. TB was swept by the Columbus Bluejackets, the first time since the start of the expansion era that the overall NHL points leader did not win a single playoff game. How many times have low seeds gone a long way in the NHL post season? Just last year Vegas, an expansion team, went all the way to the Stanley Cup finals. I’ve always thought the regular season had the feel of exhibition play, and the results often seem to bear this out.
My thanks to the gentleman who donated several books in Russian and to the couple who did likewise with CD’s, almost all in that language; and to Wolf, just back from a clean bill of health at his doctor’s, who bought six of them; and to the gentleman who purchased Monsters Inc. (2001) on DVD; and to Lynn, who selected yet another Debbie Macomber paperback, Mrs. Miracle; and to the woman who chose Exodus by Leon Uris. Six straight days of above average returns — that may be a record.
