Sweet & Sour Notes

Two items stood out in today’s NY Post: In the past three months school zone speed cameras have nailed more than a million drivers. At $50 a pop that’s $52.7 million into city coffers. Anyone doubt politicians are thinking “Keep ‘speeding’ — safety be damned”? All those tickets and not one person hit by a vehicle, which shows what a scam it is. How many politically-connected drivers got caught and weaseled out of paying? I got ticketed in April going all of 36 MPH, not a soul in sight just before eleven AM. I now do my best to avoid passing schools… A former music teacher at Hillcrest H.S. in Queens is celebrating his 20th anniversary as an occupant of one of the infamous rubber rooms. He was warehoused to one in 1997 because he constantly sexually harassed female students. He has since collected $1.7 million in salary for not working. Let’s all congratulate him.

Here’s a headline from foxnews.com that will get the attention of workers worldwide: “Microsoft Japan experiments with 3-day weekend, productivity increases by nearly 40%.” It was done during August. A study found a major factor in the productivity increase was due to meetings that were either cut, shortened or changed to virtual meetings instead of in-person. During that stretch employees took 25.4% fewer days off, printed 58.7% fewer pages and used 23.1% less electricity. 92.1% of employees said they liked the shorter workweek. What’s up with the remaining 7.9%? The company will implement the plan again next summer or at other dates in the future.

Also from FN, the most amusing headline of the day: “Spice Girl Emma Bunton accidentally sexted her mom a topless photo.” It was supposed to go to her boyfriend, whom she misses as the group tours. Mom laughed it off.

Coastal Carolina University’s mascot is the Chanticleer, a proud and fierce rooster that dominates the barnyard. This usurps my previous all-time favorite — the Zips of Akron University.

It was another quiet session of the floating book shop. My thanks to the Asian mom and daughter who bought Lisey’s Story by Stephen King, and to Mr. Conspiracy, aka Steve, who purchased The Dangerous Case of Donald Trump: 27 Psychiatrists and Mental Health Experts Assess a President. Think they might have been liberals? Nah.
