Tears & Laughter

Excerpts from an op-ed piece by Victor Davis Hanson at nypost.com: “Nationwide undergraduate enrollment has dropped by more than 650,000 students in a single year — or over 4% alone from spring 2021 to 2022, and some 14% in the last decade. Yet the US population still increases by about 2 million people a year… Men account for about 71% of the current shortfall of students… The number of history majors has collapsed by 50% in just the last 20 years.” Maybe people are wising up to what a bad deal college is for many. Class dismissed.

Amusing headline from NYP: “High utility charges could derail MTA’s $1.1B electric bus transition.”

Here’s an even funnier one from newsmax.com: “Weed Glut Forcing Some Pot Companies to Close.” Reefer Madness II, coming soon to a theater near you.

And while we’re at it, also from NM: “VP Harris’ Home Sent Migrant Buses for Christmas.” Karma, Kamala.

And here’s one from foxnews.com: “Rhode Island man tries to sneak ‘artfully concealed’ gun parts in peanut butter jars through TSA.” Doesn’t need a punchline.

RIP golf legend Kathy Whitworth, 83. Born in Texas, she turned pro at 19 and went on to win more tournaments, 88, than any golfer in history. She was the first on the LPGA tour to amass a million in earnings. She was the AP Female Athlete of the Year in 1965 and 1967. She was player of the year seven times in an eight-year span. She had the lowest scoring average seven times and was the leading money winner in eight seasons. She won eight times in 1963 and 1965, and 11 times in 1968. Here’s a quote attributed to her: “When I’m asked how I would like to be remembered, I feel that if people remember me at all, it will be good enough.” Awesome, madam. Another gem from the Staten Island goombah:

There was a limited edition book shop today despite the cold. I parked behind an SUV with out of state plates occupying the top wintertime parking space. I decided to wait, hoping the person would soon pull out. In the meantime I put out a bit of the most marketable stuff, hoping to get lucky. Despite the brilliant sunshine, I played it safe and spent half the two hours seated in the old Hyundai. My thanks to the gentleman who bought The Lake House by James Patterson. Alas, the lead spot was not vacated.
