The Day After LIV
Hail to the Chiefs. They’ve found an interesting formula for success: fall behind by double digits, then storm back. Correction: Andy Reid ranks sixth in all-time NFL head coaching wins at 222. I thought the number I posted yesterday, 140, was low and should have done further research. It must have been a very old article. Duh!
As for the halftime show, I didn’t recognize any of the music except for the few bars of Led Zeppelin’s Kashmir Shakira used. Both women looked awesome. I’m simply not a fan of extended dance sequences, which remind me of all the videos from back in the day that substituted dance for actual ideas… I didn’t pay much attention to the ads, but I did notice the many pro wrestlers who are now mainstream icons. The one ad that opened my eyes had little to to with the product. Angelo lives in the huge building that takes up the entire stretch from East 13th to Homecrest Avenue on Avenue Z. We speak occasionally and he’s been kind enough to buy books. His son, a high school freshman, has a passion for Legos, and has a youtube spot under the moniker Robbie Blox. I thought of him when I saw the ad for the new Fox reality show on the subject, Lego Masters, and asked Ang if he’d seen it. Turns out his son auditioned for the show and even got as far as signing a non-disclosure agreement before the producers went in another direction.
My thanks to Adam and Sharon for allowing me into their home to watch the big game and chow down on great food.
Best of luck to Neil, whose late mom’s co-op has finally been sold after five years of wrangling with family and lawyers. He has probably handed the keys to the intermediary by now, as he was supposed to vacate by three PM. Soon he will return to New Orleans, where he worked in the music industry. Today he related a bit of his experience as a stage hand during the Rolling Stones Steel Wheels Tour in 1989. As he was working, the orchestra was rehearsing. He thought: Damn, these guys sound as good as The Uptown Horns. It was them.
From Phil Mushnick’s sports media column at nypost.com, edited by yours truly: At this week’s stop on the PGA tour Holmes and Watson (J.B. and Bubba) appeared on the leaderboard… Also in golf, Webb Simpson, 34, won on the first playoff hole yesterday. It was the sixth win of his career. He has earned $38,451,659 since 2008, including $1,314,000 yesterday. He’s done all that despite ranking 160th in driving distance, remarkable in this age of long hitters.
Will the Democrats’ establishment again screw Bernie out of the nomination? I would never vote for him, but I respect the fact that he’s the only Dem in the field who has the balls to admit he’s a Socialist. The others are pretending they’re not or are completely deluded. The major donors want Biden, the candidate most eager to be bought.
Not much action at the floating book shop on this gorgeous spring-like day. My thanks to Lynn, who bought Timequake by Kurt Vonnegut, and to the young couple who purchased Abraham: A Journey to the Heart of Three Faiths by Bruce Feiler; and to the woman who selected a translation of the Koran into Russian; and to the young man who did a three-for-two swap of thrillers.
