The Real Thing

It’s risky to criticize wrestling mogul Vince McMahon’s business decisions. He’s been a money-making machine. I’m sure he’s had other failures, but the most obvious is his XFL football venture several years ago. He has now sold $270 million worth of WWE stock to give it another try. In light of the current AAF debacle, which may see the league go under before the end of its inaugural season, McMahon’s obsession seems terribly misguided. Then again…

Not that long ago Donald Trump participated in the wacky world of pro wrestling, “feuding” with McMahon. The legendary Classie Freddie Blassie must have had an influence on him. Last night at a rally in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the president used one of The Hollywood Fashion Plate’s pet terms to describe representative Adam Schiff, who for the past two years insisted there were mounds of evidence of Russia collusion. Trump called him “Pencil Neck,” leaving out only the “Geek” that the late, great Blassie always added.

There will soon be an auction of a 1915 Coke bottle. It is expected to draw 100,000-$150,000.

I’ve never been to San Francisco. Lately, I’ve read it has a severe homeless problem. The mayor has proposed a 200-bed shelter along the coast of San Francisco Bay, and residents are fighting it. They’ve started a GoFundMe campaign whose goal is to raise $100,000 to pay lawyer fees. So far it has attracted more than $60,000. A contrary effort has drawn $33,000, three thousand more than its goal. It will be interesting to observe this battle. Given political spin, it’s often hard to determine if the problem is as bad as stated, especially from the perspective of the opposite coast.

Even those who don’t take public transportation in NYC pay the piper. Here’s a chart from today’s NY Post:

My thanks to the kind folks who bought, donated and swapped books today. Vitaly restocked my Russian inventory, and people pounced. Also selling were Culture of Corruption: Obama and His Team of Tax Cheats, Crooks, and Cronies by Michelle Malkin, and The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins, and a large Cambridge dictionary. Special thanks to the Latino gentleman who pulled up on his bike and, as usual, overcompensated me for DVDs of the second season of Curb Your Enthusiasm and The Best of the Ben Stiller Show, and two works of non-fiction.
