Thoroughly Thursday
Freudian delight. Blackpool Tower, UK. Photo by Peter Byrne/PA, posted at theguardian.com:
Headline from nypost.com: “California school parents demand district fire teacher after viral anti-Trump rant at students.” Too harsh. A suspension until September — and a warning to cease and desist.
Unwoke? From NYP: “Seattle finally starts throwing shoplifters and other petty criminals in jail for the first time in 4 years.”
RIP versatile Brit Timothee West, 90. The son of traveling actors, he worked regular jobs until the bug bit him. There are 151 titles under his name at IMDb, screen career spanning 1959–2024. He was comfortable on the stage, starring as King Lear, and the big and small screen. He played historical figures: Churchill, Hitler, Martin Luther, Gorbachev, Samuel Johnson, Cardinal Wolsey. He appeared in numerous BBC adaptations of classics: Crime and Punishment, Richard II, Oliver Twist, Tender Is the Night, A Room with a View, Bleak House. He did a ton of guest shots on TV, and was in the Eastenders ensemble for 111 episodes. On the big screen he was in Nicholas and Alexandra (1971), Hitler: The Last Ten Days (1973), The Day of the Jackal (1973), Iris (2001). He was nominated for two BAFTA’s. Married twice, he was the father of three. He is survived by his second wife, Prunella Scales, whom he married in 1963. She was great as Basil’s suffering spouse in Fawlty Towers. She has been in age-related ill health. Photo from Google Images:
WTF? Headline from foxnews.com: “University of Rochester addresses hundreds of ‘wanted’ posters for Jewish faculty members posted around campus.”
From FN: “Welsh government advised to create dog-free zones to combat racism.” Are hounds being trained to attack minorities, ala White Dog (1982), directed by Samuel Fuller? If so, say so. According to the article by Louis Casiano, “… barriers to outdoor activities include the perception that growing food in gardens or allotments is an activity dominated by middle-aged white women.” And that is bad because…? Is this a new form of welshing?
I went out in winter garb today, not sure how long I’d be able to hang out curbside sans sunshine. I put in a full session of the Anti-Inflation Book Shop, to no avail. It was the first goose egg in weeks. My thanks to the kind folks who combined to donate a slew of books. I again left two bags of Russian books in the garden. I had whittled it to one. It would have been too much work to haul all of it home. All that great stuff and not a single sale. Geez. Sometimes…
