Three Women, Three Men

I can get behind this headline from nypost.com: “Top-earning public officials should cut their pay amid NY’s fiscal crisis.” Let’s start at 50%… It’s statements like this from a Post article that make one doubt anything anyone in leadership says about Corona: “While water activities appear safe…” It appears only that nothing is definitive… Apparently the pandemic hasn’t stemmed the violence in Chicago — nine killed during the weekend… Of the five homicides in NYC over the weekend, one was by gun, three by knife, one by concrete block. Draw your own conclusions… Here’s a protester I admire, dressed in a bikini made of medical masks:

I’m slow in paying tribute to two basketball coaching giants who recently passed away. Eddie Sutton, 84, spent nearly 40 years at the collegiate level, compiling an impressive 806–329 record at four schools. He is one of twelve in men’s D-I to eclipse 800 wins. Jerry Sloan, 77, not only had a fine career as an NBA player, averaging 14 points and seven rebounds per game, he had a 23-year run as head man of the Utah Jazz, twice leading them to the championship round, losing to Michael Jordan’s Bulls, who Sloan coached, pre-his-airness, from ‘79-’82. His overall league record was 1221–803, a shade better than 60%. Both men accomplished everything but winning the big prize. Kudos.

I was rooting around youtube for something interesting to watch and hit on a couple of fun short videos on Pre-Code Hollywood. For those unfamiliar with the term, it refers to the years before stricter censorship was instituted in 1935. One video featured Toby Wing, whose career spanned 1924-’38. She has 57 titles under her name at IMDb, many of them billed at “uncredited.” Not one is notable, to my knowledge. Even though she left the business before WWII, she was one of its most popular pinups. Her dad survived the Bataan Death March. Her husband, Eastern Airlines ace Dick Merrill, a pioneer of aviation, was too old to fly combat missions, but flew supplies to China from bases in Burma and India. They were married for 44 years until his death at 85 in 1982. Ironically, given her film career, Wing became a Sunday school teacher. She also dabbled in real estate and acted in a few plays. She passed away at 85 in 2001. Here she is:

I’ve completed another run through of the novella on which I’m working. It’s now more than 22,000 words and will grow a bit more, as I’ve already jotted down two additions that will be made. I’m not taking a break this time. I’ll start proofing tomorrow. Suddenly I’m anxious to get it done.
