RIP NHL mainstay Petr Klima, 58. Born in Czechoslovakia, he defected to North America in 1985, aided by two Red Wings execs. He played four seasons in Detroit. Exasperated by his drinking, the team traded him to the Oilers during the ‘89-’90 season. He scored the winning goal in the longest Stanley Cup Finals game in history, the third overtime of Game One. Edmonton beat Boston in five, without Wayne Gretzky, who’d been traded to L.A.. Klima also played for the Los Angeles Kings, Pittsburgh Penguins and Tampa Bay Lightning. He scored 320 goals and had 260 assists. He played his final two pro seasons in the Czech Republic, where he was living at the time of his death. He was a dad of twin sons.
