RIP author Peter Straub, 79. Born in Milwaukee, he earned a Master’s at Columbia. He had modest commercial success with his first four novels, then broke big with Ghost Story, which was adapted to the screen in 1981, starring Fred Astaire, and is being updated currently. In all, he wrote scores of novels and short stories, four volumes of poetry and a collection of essays. He collaborated with Stephen King on two novels, including The Talisman, adapted to the big screen in 2008 and currently in production as a mini-series. Julia, starring Mia Farrow, was adapted as The Haunting of Julia (1977). Straub was a recipient of the Bram Stoker Award, World Fantasy Award, and International Horror Guild Award. He lived for a time in Ireland, then London before settling in NYC in 1979. Married since 1966, he is a dad of two. Well done, sir. Photo from GI:

The sprinkles cleared out and the floating book shop enjoyed an almost full session. My thanks to the ladies who swapped books in Russian, and to the gentleman who bought ten DVDs in that language; and to Alice, who purchased The Man from St. Petersburg by Ken Follett; and to Lou, who selected the DVD of Deception (2008), starring Hugh Jackman; and to Wolf, who took home two opera DVDs.

Boldt Castle is in upstate New York. Before today I was not aware that there were any in the USA. There are at least 30.
