RIP MLB slugger Frank Howard, 87. Born in Columbus, Ohio, he didn’t travel far for college, attending OSU, where he was All-American in both baseball and basketball. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Warriors of the NBA in 1958. He signed with the Dodgers instead. He was the NL’s Rookie of the Year in ’60. He was a member of L.A.’s 1963 World Series champions, his home run in Game Four breaking a scoreless tie in an eventual 2–1 win against the Yankees, who the Dodgers swept. He was traded to the Senators after the ’64 season. He led the A.L. in homers in ’68 and ’70, and RBI in ’70. In ’72 the team moved to Texas, becoming the Rangers. He hit the franchise’s first home run. His skills were beginning to erode, however. His contract was sold to Detroit, which left him off the post season roster. His final season was in ’73. In all he batted .273 and had 382 dingers, the latter ranking 70th all-time. A few years after his playing career ended, he became a coach, then manager of the Padres and Mets. He was not successful in the latter endeavor, record 93–144. Married twice, he was a father of six, all with his first wife. Well done, Hondo. Photo from GI:
Love this headline from nypost.com: “Water brand aims to tap anti-woke market: ‘Made from liberal tears.’” Freedom2o, $11 per six pack. As much as I like the idea, I’ll pass. Here’s entrepreneur Elizabeth White, photo from NYP/GI:
Headline from newsmax.com: “House GOP Unveils Bill to Fund Israel by Cutting IRS Budget.” Oh pretty please.
Par for the political course, headline from foxnews.com about Jersey gov Phil Murphy: “Dem struggles to reimburse taxpayers after spending their cash on Taylor Swift concert.”
The last day of October was fortuitous for the floating book shop. It was the second-best month of the year in terms of cash flow. My thanks to the kind folks who donated, swapped and bought stuff, especially the gentleman who returned for four more of my books: Five Cents, A Hitch in Twilight, Class of ’67 and Coincidence. Here’s what else sold: The Cradle Will Fall and Weep No More, My Lady, both by Mary Higgins Clark; three books in Russian, including two translations of Arthur Hailey works; a special edition of Life magazine devoted to Sean Connery. I am blessed.
