Trini & the Rest

RIP actor/singer Trini Lopez, 83, who succumbed to Corona. He had a long run as a recording artist. In 1963 his single of If I Had a Hammer (Pete Seeger/Lee Hays) reached #3 on the Billboard Hot 100. In ’64 Lemon Tree (Will Holt) reached #20. His biggest success came from two live recordings done at PJ’s in Hollywood. The ’63 album hit #2, the ’64 #11. The latter featured the lively, infectious Oh Lonesome Me, written by country artist Don Gibson. Lopez’s Wiki profile lists more than 30 of his LPs, but the article says there were 65, the last in 2011. He designed Gibson guitars. Eleven of his other singles charted. IMDb lists nine titles under his name as Actor, the most notable The Dirty Dozen (1967). Well done, sir. Thank you.

Hoboken officials are contemplating a $250 fine for those who do not wear a mask in areas where social distancing is problematic. It would be interesting to see how those who do not comply react. In observing the public while selling books curbside, it seems Asians are almost in full compliance with the measure, all other groups 75%. I wear one in store, otherwise it remains around my neck in case someone complains. So far no one has. I’d pull it up and down as soon as the person left. I have no idea if they are of any use. I think those that tout them just don’t know what else to do or say. Social distancing is the most effective course, but that’s so hard for most folks — even a loner like me.

It didn’t take long for Stanley Cup playoff madness to begin. Last night the Tampa Bay Lightning defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets in five overtimes, the fourth longest game in NHL history. Two records were set: Columbus goalie Joonas Korpisalo made 85 saves on 88 shots, and his teammate, Brayden Point, logged sixty-five-minutes-six-seconds of ice time. Game Two of the series has been pushed back a day. Toughen up, buttercups.

Looks like the NCAA football season will be bizarre — if it comes off at all. So far the Big 12 is planning to play a conference only schedule beginning in late September. The ACC plans to begin on the 5th, the SEC on the 26th. The Big Ten, MAC, MWC and Pac 12 have cancelled. This headline at Yahoo Sports is spot on: “College football as divided as the country itself.”

My thanks to the gentleman who purchased ten hardcovers, all non-fiction except Danielle Steel’s Secrets, and to the woman who purchased three books in Russian; and to the one who did a five-for-three swap of said; and to the Frenchman, who returned for another volume of Primo Levi and Thomas Cromwell: A Revolutionary Life by Diarmaid MacCulloch; and to the gentleman who purchased The Lord of the Rings trilogy on DVD.
