Which pasta dish do Italian people eat on Friday the 13th? Fettuccini Afraid-o. (From kidadl.com)

Headline from newsmax.com: “2 Russian Battalions Destroyed; Largest Loss Since War Began.” Who would have predicted how the war has gone? In the beginning it seemed “slaughter sides,” as we used to say in Brooklyn back in the day when one team seemed to have more talent than the other.

LOL headline from NM: “Study Finds Cleaner Air Leads to More Atlantic Hurricanes.” More spin work for environmental zealots. How ‘bout?: “Liar, liar, pants on fire.”

RIP actor Fred Ward, 79. Born in San Diego, after a stint in the Air Force and in boxing, he led a nomadic life until he reached Rome, where in the early 70’s he landed two roles on TV and dubbed Spaghetti Westerns. He returned to the states and began getting work, his breakout role in Clint Eastwood’s Escape from Alcatraz (1979). There are 89 titles under his name at IMDb in a career that spanned 1973–2018. Here are significant movies in which he appeared: Southern Comfort (1981), Uncommon Valor (1983), as astronaut Gus Grissom in The Right Stuff (1983), Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins (1985), Tremors (1990), The Player (1992), Bob Roberts (1992), and Naked Gun 33 1/3: The Final Insult (1994). He won two awards as part of the large ensemble of Robert Altman’s Short Cuts (1993), a Golden Globe and a Volpi Cup from the Venice Film Festival. Married twice, he is a father of one. He was one of those actors blessed with naturalness. Well done, sir. Thank you. Here he is in his most memorable role:

No luck selling books on the street today, first goose egg since 2/28. Maybe it was mass Triskaidekaphobia. My thanks to the woman who donated a handful of kids’ books, and to all those who stopped to chat, especially Christina, who was surprised I remembered selling her Elie Wiesel’s Night when she was in sixth grade. She’s now at least 16, lovely, and has a strong grip when shaking hands.
