Trivia & More

I learned a fantastic bit of trivia today. Johnny Carson once starred in a Broadway play, The Tunnel of Love. Tow Ewell was the original lead. He did one year and was followed by the late-night legend, who did six weeks, 1/10/’58–2/23, more than four years from the beginning of his long run as host of The Tonight Show. Larry Parks did the final four of the 417 performances. According to Ed Sullivan’s syndicated column, the show turned a profit of $147,000, probably a nice hunk of change back then. A comedy, The Tunnel of Love is about a couple trying to conceive and also considering adoption. It was co-written by its director, Joseph Fields, and Peter DeVries, based on the latter’s novel. It was adapted to the big screen in 1958, starring Doris Day and Richard Widmark, a rare flop for both those great artists. Here are Carson and co-star Marsha Hunt, who had equal billing. Facts from Wiki, photo from Google Images:

Given the many fatal stabbings occurring, maybe knives as well as guns should be banned. The violence sweeping across the USA, including suicides, has me wondering if it’s due to a hidden virus related to Covid.

Kudos to Saturday Night Live for lampooning Quid Pro Joe’s constant, silly deviations from the truth. Headline from nypost.com: “High satire: ‘SNL’ mocks Biden, jokes he smoked weed with pardoned pot convicts.” Better late than never.

Headline from newsmax.com: “60 Years After Integrating ‘Ole Miss,’ James Meredith Is Republican and Christian.” The personal evolution of some folks is fascinating.

New on the selective outrage front. Headline from foxnews.com: “Me Too Movement silent following Politico’s outing of GOP candidate who survived sexual assault.” In a similar vein, this FN headline: “LA councilwoman caught on tape making racist comments has history of calling America, Trump racist.”

Not much action at the floating book shop on this glorious day. My thanks to the gentleman who dropped off a number of books, and to my constant benefactress, who insisted on paying for a beautiful pictorial in the Frozen series despite donating three books; and to the woman who bought a kids’ book and thriller in Russian; and to the one who settled her tab; and to Wolf, who did a swap of Russian titles; and to Herbie, who imparted the trivia about Carson.
