This beautiful home was spared the ravages of the terrible fire that swept through the Texas panhandle. Reuters photo by Adrees Latif:
RIP former MLB SS U.L. Washington, 70, who succumbed to cancer. Born in Oklahoma, one of eleven children, the letters in his name do not represent anything else. He played one year of college baseball before being admitted to the Kansas City Royals Baseball Academy. He became one of only three players to advance to the majors from it, the others Frank White and Ron Washington. He made his big league debut in late 1977 and played for the Royals until ’84. He then played one year for the Expos and two for the Pirates. In eleven seasons he batted .255 and had 27 homers. In four post seasons for the Royals he hit .279 in 43 ABs. After his playing career, he served as a minor league coach or manager for the Pirates, Dodgers, Twins and Red Sox. He was known for the ever-present toothpick in his mouth. Well done, Sir. Headline from foxnews.com out of Utah: “State inches closer to arming teachers and giving them gun training for free.” And in a related story: “Louisiana becomes nation’s 28th state with constitutional carry law on the books: ‘landmark victory’.” Although I’m not comfortable around guns, I understand the need some people feel to arm themselves.
I don’t like when people are attacked in public for their political beliefs, so I can’t blame AOC for snapping at know-it-alls, but how is what she suffered any different than Maxine Waters’ call to confront Trump administration officials whenever they are out in public?
The floating book shop was rained out and the forecast is iffy for the next several days. Fortunately, I came up with a story idea of the speculative variety, which should fill time. It’s about the weird effect a lunar eclipse has on a small town. The first draft is four handwritten pages. It was so much fun. Again, I didn’t have the heart to bump anyone off. I wonder if it’s because part of aging is confrontation with mortality. In good health, I am far from wanting to go but realize the end can come suddenly.
