I refused to be cowed by the world’s chaos. I will go out every day, do what I do, and try to stay positive.
RIP Pete Rose, 83. Born in Cincinnati, he became one of MLB’s all-time greats. I believed he should not have been allowed the honor of entry into the Hall of Fame while alive, but now that he has passed his sins should be forgiven and his place secured immediately. And let Shoeless Joe Jackson in as well. Here are Charley Hustle’s individual accomplishments: 17-time All-Star, three-time World Series champion, NL MVP, World Series MVP, NL Rookie of the Year, two-time Gold Glove Award, Silver Slugger Award, Roberto Clemente Award, three-time NL batting champion, Cincinnati Reds #14 retired, Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame, Major League Baseball All-Century Team. MLB records: 4256 career hits, 3215 career singles, 3562 career games played, 14,053 career at-bats, 15,890 career plate appearances. His final BA was .303. He managed the Reds from ’84 until August 12th of ’89, when he was suspended for betting. He had a record of 412–373, the team finishing second in each of his four full seasons. He later earned money working WWF/WWE big wrestling events and put in two seasons at Fox as a studio analyst. He made a mint at autograph shows. Married twice, he had a total of five kids with three women. Photo from Google Images:
RIP NBA stalwart Dikembe Mutombo, 58, who succumbed to cancer. Born in the Republic of Congo, one of ten children, his father a school principal, he spoke English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and five Central African languages. He earned a degree in linguistics and diplomacy from Georgetown, where he was named the Big East Defensive Player of the Year twice due to the shot-blocking ability his seven-foot-two frame allowed. He was selected in the first round of 1991 draft by the Denver Nuggets, the fourth pick overall. He played for six teams in his 18-year career, including the Knicks and Nets. Here are individual accomplishments: eight-time NBA All-Star, All-NBA Second Team, two-time All-NBA Third Team, four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year, three-time NBA All-Defensive First Team, three-time NBA All-Defensive Second Team, NBA All-Rookie First Team, two-time NBA rebounding leader, three-time NBA blocks leader, #55 retired by the Atlanta Hawks and Denver Nuggets. He was a father of seven, adopting four of his wife’s deceased brothers’ children. He was also very active in charity and received several humanitarian awards. An exemplary man, gone much too soon. Well done, Sir. Photo from GI:
Hey Buttigieg, drag the leaders of the opposing factions into a room and hammer out a solution to the port strike.
Israel is on an amazing run in its effort to rid itself of its enemies. Unfortunately, it seems there will never be peace in the region. Today’s defense of the missile attack, with the help of the USA, was amazing, but corroboration for those who believe WWIII has begun.
Aging brings many challenges. While reading, my vision is sometimes blurry and I wonder if it’s time to have cataract surgery. The past few days my vision has been fine. Go figure. Maybe it’s that spiking of blood sugar seniors frequently mention.
Headline from nypost.com: “Mount Everest is bizarrely still growing — here’s what’s driving the phenomenon.” According to the article by Alex Mitchell, it has to do with the river below eroding bedrock and making things lighter. I don’t understand it and leave it to the eggheads. The Himalayan, East Asia mountain has grown between 49 and 164 feet in the past 89,000 years. I’ll take their word for it.
Headline from foxnews.com: “ANTISEMITISM EXPOSED: Hamas leader killed in Lebanon was UN employee, agency confirms.” Anyone surprised?
It was bombs away today at the Anti-Inflation Book Shop. I had to leave two bags of law books at the free book kiosk I set up beside Waj’s food cart. My thanks to the donors, and to The Quiet Man, who took home two compilations of ’60-’70’s music, a season of the 1950’s show Topper on DVD, and two Japanese movies I’d never heard of: Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart at the River Styx (1972) and Lone Wolf and Cub: Baby Cart in Peril (1972); and to the woman who bought Caesar, historical fiction from Colleen McCullough; and to the woman who chose three senior citizen activity books and The Complete Handbook Of Novel Writing: Everything You Need to Know About Creating & Selling Your Work by Writer’s Digest Editors; and to the woman who selected Speak English Like an American by Amy Gillett. I prosper while millions suffer. Such is life in this crazy world.
