RIP Super Bowl champion DT Fred Miller, 88. Born in Louisiana, the son of a sharecropper, All-American at LSU, he was drafted in the seventh round of the 1962 draft by the Colts. In a career that spanned 1963-’72, he was all-league second team twice and played in three pro bowls. He was on the losing end of the 1964 NFL championship game vs. the Browns and Super Bowl III vs. the Jets before reaching the zenith as a member of the team that defeated the Cowboys in Super Bowl V. During his run he had ten fumble recoveries and 52 sacks. After retiring he bought into a hog farm, sold forklifts and served as VP of a machinery firm. He was a father of four sons. Well done sir. I’m not religious. I don’t believe God, if He exists, intercedes in human activity. I think prayer falls on deaf ears. But I do not ridicule believers, since I have no answers to life’s mystery. And I love this foxnews.com headline that is sure to set self-righteous know-it-alls fuming: “‘Jesus Revolution’ performs miracles at the box office, receives rave reviews from audience.”

The floating book shop was rained out today. After yesterday’s repairs, I took the old Hyundai on a test run on the Belt Parkway. Everything seems fine, even though the manager told me there’s even more that needs attention. I hope that won’t prevent the car from passing inspection. I can handle it financially, but paying more will rankle.
