Tuesday Tidings
RIP NBA Hall of Fame Center Bill Walton, 71, who succumbed to cancer. Born in La Mesa, California, he was one of the most successful athletes of all-time, winning two state championships in high school, two NCAA championships at UCLA and two NBA titles, despite constant leg injuries, especially to his feet. As a high school senior he made 384 of 490 shots, 78.3%, still the all-time national record. He was the number one pick in the 1974 draft, selected by Portland. Here’s a list of his other individual accomplishments: NBA Finals MVP (1977), NBA Most Valuable Player (1978), two-time NBA All-Star (1977, 1978), All-NBA First Team (1978), All-NBA Second Team (1977), two-time NBA All-Defensive First Team (1977, 1978), NBA Sixth Man of the Year (1986), NBA rebounding leader (1977), NBA blocks leader (1977), #32 retired by Portland Trail Blazers, NBA anniversary team (50th, 75th), two-time NCAA Final Four Most Outstanding Player (1972, 1973), three-time National college player of the year (1972–1974), three-time Consensus first-team All-American (1972–1974), James E. Sullivan Award (1973), #32 retired by UCLA, College Basketball Hall of Fame. At UCLA he shot 65.1% from the field, averaging 20.3 points, 15.7 rebounds, and 5.5 assists. The Bruins were 86–4 in his three seasons. As a pro he also played for the Clippers and Celtics, winning a championship with the latter. In ten seasons he averaged 13.3 points, 10.5 rebounds, 3.4 assists and 2.2 blocked shots, and shot 52.1% from the floor. Following his playing career, he had a long run in broadcasting, receiving an Emmy for Best Live Sports Television Broadcast in 2001. His politics were radical and he wasn’t afraid to speak his mind. Married twice, he was a father of four. His son Luke was a member of two NBA championships with the Lakers. Bill and Luke were the first NBA father-son pair to win multiple NBA championships. His older brother Bruce played 33 games with the Cowboys as a backup offensive lineman/special-teamer. He played in Super Bowl X, a loss to the Steelers. Bruce and Bill are the only brother combination to ever play in the Super Bowl and the NBA finals. Awesome, Sir. Photo from Google Images:
Changing America, headline from nypost.com: “Gen Z teens largely put the brakes on driving, signaling ‘seismic’ shift in US car culture: study.” It is not hyperbole. Most Americans have always loved cars. It seems more evidence of the left’s control of the USA. Another sign, headline from foxnews.com: “Electric vehicles among all top winners in AAA car buying guide.” This despite the strip mining required for the batteries, the heavy weight of them that damages roads at a faster rate, and the higher cost.
Although I admired Queen Elizabeth, I don’t pay much attention to the Royal Family. King Charles didn’t seem very bright, so I was surprised to find he’s a successful artist. Photo from GI:
And here’s one of his sculptures, which will soon be up for auction. Photo from GI:
Another reason to move to Fla., from NYP: “Housekeepers make $150K a year in these Florida cities — here’s why salaries have skyrocketed.” Remember — summer is about eight months long down there.
For those who love Hollywood dirt. Photo from GI:
Following the lead of McDonalds and Burger King, headline from nypost.com: “Amazon Fresh to cut grocery prices by as much as 30% to bring back inflation-battered customers.”
No book shop today, as I attended to a chore.
