Fun in L.A., photo by Daniel Cole/Reuters. My earliest recollection of the craze is Maryann Conti, 13 or so, doing it with ease. I never got the hang of it:

Headline from nypost.com: “More than 223K migrants have flooded NYC so far — double Albany’s population.” Madness.

Among today’s celebrations, it’s National Entrepreneur’s Day. Thank you to all those risk takers who provide for the rest of us and who keep at it despite the grief they endure from government.

Last night the Grit channel, 31–3 on OTA in NYC, ran Gunfight at the OK Corral (1957), starring Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas as Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday respectively. It’s a solid western, good not great. The cast is a cinephile’s dream: Lee Van Cleef, dispatched within the first 15 minutes; Jo Van Fleet; the gorgeous Rhonda Fleming; Frank Faylen; Lyle Bettger; DeForest Kelly; Dennis Hopper; Earl Holliman; Ted de Corsia; Whit Bissell; Martin Milner; Kenneth Tobey; John Ireland. Here’s a great bit of trivia from IMDb: “The legendary gunfight took place on October 26, 1881 and lasted thirty seconds, resulting in three dead men after an exchange of thirty-four bullets. The fictionalized gunfight in this movie took four days to film, and produced an on-screen bloodbath that lasted five minutes.” Here’s Fleming in character, photo from Google Images:

The psychology of human beings is fascinating. My father’s life span was approximately 74.6. Since he was a smoker and I have never been and haven’t shared more and probably less than ten joints in my life, I hoped I would live longer. But I was wary of a genetic marker that would trigger the cancer that took him. That has yet to happen. I’d mentally calculated December 1st as the day I would begin surpassing my dad’s lifespan. This morning I did the math with the aid of a website. The actual date was November 4th. Silly, I’m relieved. I won’t be cheated.

Headline from foxnews.com concerning Mika & Joe: “Liberal co-host responds to backlash for meeting with Trump amid ‘ratings tank’.” They’re just as oily as politicians.

Not Asia — London, Reuters photo by Mina Kim:

My PC’s performance is back in the doldrums after a one day reprieve. Is China’s hacking of T Mobile an act of war?

More great weather, and a good return for the Anti-Inflation Book Shop. My thanks to the gentleman who overcompensated me for a glossy art pictorial on DaVinci, Leonardo; and to Sophie, who chauffered her husband to and from the nook, and to Wolf, who bought two massive art pictorials, The Birdcage (1996) on DVD, and Rogue Warrior: Seize the Day by Richard Marcinko and Jim DeFelice; and to the woman who purchased Izzy & Oscar, a kids’ book by Allison Estes, Dan Stark, et al.; and to the young man who took home a recent edition of Detective Comics featuring the Caped Crusader… Rafa, a Soviet emigre, stops by a couple of times a week to talk politics. He mentioned a friend who served in the Navy in the communist paradise of Cuba. The kid was 18. Woman offered sex for a bar of soap or shampoo.
