RIP Broadway legend Chita Rivera, 91. Born in DC, of Puerto Rican/Scottish descent, at 15 she earned a scholarship to the George Balanchine School of American Ballet in NYC. In the early ‘50’s she began landing parts in musicals on the Great White Way, her debut Guys and Dolls. Her breakout role came in ’57, Anita in West Side Story. In ’61 she co-starred in Bye Bye Birdie. She did not win a Tony until ’84, The Rink, then won another in ’93 for Kiss of the Spider Woman. In 2018 she was honored with the Lifetime Achievement in Theater. In all she received ten Tony nominations. She has 20 screen credits, including seven episodes of The New Dick Van Dyke Show. Her most notable film appearances came in Sweet Charity (1969) and Chicago (2002). She made three appearances each on The Ed Sullivan Show and The Hollywood Palace, two on The Carol Burnett Show and one on The Judy Garland Show. From ’57 to ’66 she was married to actor/dancer/choreographer Tony Mordente, A-Rab in the stage version, Action in the film version of West Side Story. They had a daughter. Awesome, Madam. Thank you. This seems like a cool place to live, East Village, Manhattan. Photo from nypost.com:

More evidence the world is devolving on this Backwards Day. From NYP: “Jamaica travel warning issued after 65 murders in just four weeks.” Population less than three million.

Why are so many Republicans bent out of shape about Nikki Haley staying in the race? Relax.

Carbon copy of yesterday’s weather at the floating book shop: no wind but no sunshine, which had me spending most of today’s session in the car. My thanks to Dina, who did a swap of Russian titles, and to Angelo who, as usual, overcompensated me for his purchases: Class of ’67 by yours truly, Leave the Gun, Take the Cannoli: The Epic Story of the Making of The Godfather by Mark Seal, and Lawyer Know Thyself: A Psychological Analysis of Personality Strengths and Weaknesses by Susan Swaim Daicoff, which he bought for his son Robbie, who had straight A’s in his first semester at Brooklyn College but is undecided on a major. I hope he doesn’t choose law.
