RIP Hollywood mainstay Norman Jewison, 97. Born in Toronto, he served in the Royal Canadian Navy during WWII. He earned a degree at the University of Toronto, where he was involved in writing, directing and acting in various theatrical productions. He worked in London for a while, then returned to his homeland and was instrumental in early Canadian TV. In 1958 he went to work for NBC. His success with Your Hit Parade and The Andy Williams Show led to specials featuring Danny Kaye, Harry Belafonte, Pat Boone, and in Judy Garland’s spectacular comeback. The opening segment, featuring a medley by the star and Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, is as good as anything that’s ever aired, simple yet awesome. Jewison went on to direct Garland’s short-lived show, which for some reason didn’t catch on. From there he began directing films. There are 44 titles under his name in the category of director, 39 in producer. Five of his films were nominated for Best Picture: The Russians Are Coming the Russians Are Coming (1966), In the Heat of the Night (1967), Fiddler on the Roof (1971), A Soldier’s Story (1984) and Moonstruck (1987). In the Heat of the Night won. Jewison himself was nominated three times but did not win. Other notable movies: The Cincinnati Kid (1965), The Thomas Crown Affair (1968), Jesus Christ Superstar (1973), And Justice For All (1979), The Hurricane (1999). Overall, his films received 46 Oscar nominations, winning twelve. In 1999 he was honored by the Academy with the Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award. He was nominated for two Emmys, Daytime: Outstanding Children’s Special, Walter and Henry, shared with three others; and Primetime: Outstanding Made for Television Movie, Dinner with Friends, shared with four others. Married to his first wife from 1953 until her death in 2004, he was a father of three. His second marriage lasted from 2010 to his passing. Awesome, Sir. Back to the drawing board, headline from foxnews.com: “North Carolina city spent millions on electric buses that don’t run.”

RIP actor Gary Graham, 73. Born in southern California, his career spanned 1975 to the present, four works to appear posthumously. There are 108 titles under his name at IMDb. He was comfortable on the big or small screen. He appeared in Hardcore (1979) and All the Right Moves (1983). On TV he was a mainstay on Alien Nation, appearing in the TV movie that got it started, the 22 episodes of the series, and five more TV movies. He was in nine episodes of M.A.N.T.I.S., six of JAG, twelve of Star Trek: Enterprise, and made guest appearances on tons of primetime shows. His fourth marriage lasted from 1999 until his death. He was a father of one. He also wrote this book, photo from GI:

The floating book shop had to contend with sprinkles today, so it wasn’t much fun. My thanks to the woman who donated a bunch of DVDs and a few books, and to the one who bought The Frugal Gourmet by Jeff Smith, and to the gentleman who purchased a Russian translation of a Danielle Steel novel.
