Two Goombahs & More
Headline from nypost.com: “Subway’s cash-strapped franchisees revolt over $6.99 footlong deal: ‘Advising to opt out’.” They want to charge even more for mediocrity. I should be more compassionate, as costs have increased, forcing everyone to raise prices, but I had so many unsatisfying experiences with Subway that it’s hard to be fair.
Vivid imagery, from NYP: “One of the world’s tiniest airports has a waiting area under a mango tree.” Picture Ursula Andress in Dr. No (1962), and Sean Connery spotting her and singing Underneath the Mango Tree (Monty Norman). Photo from Google Images:
RIP Barnes & Noble founder Leonard Riggio, 83. Born in NYC, son of a pro boxer, he’s an alumni of Brooklyn Tech H. S. While attending NYU, he went to work in its bookstore and worked his way up, learning the business rather than sticking with academics. Married twice, he was a father of three. Thank you, Goombah. A youtube video provided great information on a forgotten pioneer of rock n roll, guitarist Danny Cedrone, son of Italian immigrants. Born in upstate NY, he was a session man on Rocket 88 by Bill Haley and His Saddlemen, considered one of the first rock n roll recordings. Since he had his own band, The Esquires, he did not join Haley’s group even after it became the Comets. In 1952 he played lead on the track Rock the Joint, the exact solo he would use on Rock Around the Clock in ’54, carving an immortal role in music history. At first sales of the single were disappointing. It zoomed to the top of the charts when it was used to open the hard-hitting film adaptation of Evan Hunter’s Blackboard Jungle (1955). The song has since been featured numerous times in film and TV, and the solo has influenced countless axmen. Tragically, Cedrone did not experience the success, as he was killed at 34 in a fall eight days after the recording session, leaving behind a wife and four daughters. Although it is believed he did not ever play with the Comets live, he was inducted into the Rock n roll Hall of Fame as a member of the band. Awesome, Goombah. Photo from GI:
Excerpt from a newsmax.com article by Katie McManus: “…For every one pound of lithium mined, 3069 pounds of Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is emitted into the air… They likened charging an EV to running a washing machine five times a day…” EV’s are a fraud in terms of the environmental issue.
Just heard a cute parody of Lesley Gore’s It’s My Party (Gore/Wally Gold), stated by Bill O’Reilly on Sean Hannity’s radio show: “It’s my part and I’ll lie if I want to.” Guess who he was talking about. Kudos.
An occasional breeze took a bit of the sting out of the heat and humidity at today’s session of the Anti-Inflation Book Shop. I sold only five books, but each was large. My thanks to the gentleman who purchased Rock Style: A Book of Rock, Hip-Hop, Pop, R&B, Punk, Funk and the Fashions That Give Looks to Those Sounds by Tommy Hilfiger and Anthony Decurtis; and to the elderly woman who bought European Authors, 1000–1900: A Biographical Dictionary of European Literature by Stanley Kunitz & Professor Vineta Colby; and to Herbie, who took home The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd; and to the young woman who overcompensated me for a large tome in Russian that seemed historical in theme; and to Ira, who brought me two bottles of Poland Spring. I am blessed.
