Jerry Seinfeld — you are not liberal enough! Repent! At least the Duke students’ walk-out protest was peaceful.

Opening paragraph of an article by Eric Mack at newsmax.com: “There is a faction of Iranian Jews in Los Angeles, ‘Tehrangeles,’ pledging allegiance to Israel and not Iran amid the war on Hamas terrorists in Gaza.” If only the support spread among Muslims.

Among today’s celebrations, it’s Israel Independence Day. That tiny dot on the world map continues to thrive despite efforts to exterminate it. May it continue to do so.

RIP actress Susan Backlinie, 77. Her name may be unfamiliar but at one-time she was world-famous. A California girl, her debut would be her most notable screen appearance. She played the young swimmer in the opening scene of Jaws (1975), the shark’s first victim. That insured a sort of immortality, as the movie is certain to endure for the foreseeable future. She has only ten other credits, none particularly notable. She did a couple of spreads for magazines, Penthouse in ’73, which captured the attention of Steven Spielberg, and Mayfair post-Jaws. Here’s a quote attributed to her: “I do about four or five [conventions] a year. It’s fun to go out and meet all the fans. They all have the same thing to say and the main thing they say all the time is: ‘You’ve kept me out of the water.’” She was married three times, the last union from 1995 until her passing. A pleasant day, perfect for doing curbside business. My thanks to the Cookbook Lady, who took home another, and to the young woman who bought Narcissus and Goldmund by Hermann Hesse; and to the young female artist who purchased Painting Blooms & Blossoms by Judy Diephouse; and to the one who overcompensated me for The Melancholy Science: An Introduction to the Thought of Theodor W. Adorno (Radical Thinkers) by Gillian Rose, and Peter and the Blue Witch Baby by Robert D. San Souci and Alexi Natchev; and to Frankie, who did likewise for a Santana CD collection, Labyrinth (1986) on DVD and a chop-socky DVD that had “Master” in the title.
