Universal Fun Day

Here are some fun facts about Halloween, gleaned from thepioneerwoman.com, edited by yours truly:
It originated in Ireland and was brought to the USA by immigrants.
The fear of Halloween is called Samhainophobia. It comes from Samhain, the Gaelic festival that inspired Halloween.
Jack-o’-lanterns were inspired by an Irish legend. A guy named Stingy Jack fooled the devil and in turn was forced to walk the Earth with only a burning coal in a hollowed turnip to light his way. The Irish began to call him “Jack of the Lantern,” and then just “Jack o’Lantern.”
Harry Houdini died on Halloween in 1926.
The mask worn by Michael Myers in Halloween was patterned after William Shatner. First I’ve heard of it, but I definitely see the resemblance. Photo from GI:
From a newsmax.com article by Brian Pfail: “Last year was the first time California’s death rate from all drug overdoses surpassed that of lung cancer, ranking just below hypertensive heart disease. The increase was almost entirely due to fentanyl which recorded 5,722 deaths.” Let’s hope the sickies out there don’t give it out today as a disguised treat, as was rumored several weeks ago.
I’d been waiting for news on this. Headline from NM: “US Abortions Decreased by 10,000 After Roe Overturned.” According to the accompanying article by Nick Koutsobinas: “… in other states, the number of abortions rose by an aggregate of about 12,000.” As expected, women are crossing state lines. Still, ten thousand fewer abortions is significant progress. Of course, there’s no knowing if there has been a drop in pregnancies or if the women in that number will see the pregnancy through to the end.
Opening line from an NM article by Eric Mack: “The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is working on making smart bullets the next generation of guided war weaponry…” Sounds very tricky. The idea is to minimize civilian casualties. I’m skeptical but hope I’m wrong.
Let’s see: Pelosi denied Trump’s request for thousands of troops to guard the Capitol two days before the 1/6 riot, and she doesn’t have security in her home in San Francisco, which is suffering a crime wave. At least she walks the liberal walk. Will she continue to support unfettered border crossings as well, given that the attacker is an illegal immigrant, in this case from Canada? Life always plays it tricks.
It was an unusually warm, windless day, perfect for selling stuff curbside. My thanks to those who treated me well, especially the gentleman who bought 16 hardcover novels by Dontsova, described by some as the Danielle Steel of Russia; and to the gentleman who did a swap and buy; and to Wolf, who donated The President’s Plane Is Missing by James Patterson and Bill Clinton, which an elderly gentleman immediately pounced on; and to the woman who bought a large paperback in Russian.
