Weight

Friday night’s movie fix was a broad mix of satire and action, The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent (2022). Nicolas Cage stars as himself and seems to relish self-parody, the film’s best aspect. He is invited to the Spanish estate of his biggest fan, who the CIA suspects is head of a major criminal organization. Javi has written a screenplay for his idol. The rapport between the star and Pedro Pascal is the second-best aspect of the flick. The narrative has the actor becoming as heroic as the characters he has played, although bumbling. I’m not sure if the main storyline is a movie within a movie. Whatever, it’s light entertainment. It’s running time is 1:47. The violence is not intense or graphic. There is plenty of profanity. Tom Gormican directed, only his second full length feature. He co-wrote the screenplay with Kevin Etten. The film came up just short of breaking even at the box office, but likely became a plus due to streaming and DVD sales and rentals. I’m not sure its appeal extends far beyond fans of Cage. I’m a casual one, so some of the references were lost on me. 116,000+ users at IMDb have rated The Unbearable…, forging to a consensus of seven on a scale of ten, a bit high by me. Here are Cage and Pascal in character:

Born in Chile in 1975, Pascal has been working steadily since 1996, mostly in TV. He’s been in 30 episodes of Narcos, 24 of The Mandalorian, ten of Graceland, seven of Game of Thrones, six of The Good Wife, and in one or more of many popular programs, including one of my favorites, The Mentalist.

The sense of entitlement of many Americans isn’t always about money — at least not directly. Headline from nypost.com: “Two protesters storm stage during DeSantis’ speech in New Hampshire.”

From NYP: “What baloney! $29 ham and cheese sandwich a total rip-off — so why are NYers eating it up?” The equivalent of two small sandwiches, it’s $31.57 including tax. The store is Eli Zabar’s on the UES. And I think Subway is grossly overpriced!

Also from NYP: “Heavy losses: Russia’s special forces units suffered 95% casualty rate in Ukraine: docs.” And for what — Vlad’s ego?

Top this headline, from NYP: “Naked and afraid: LA business owner says nude homeless camp is deterring customers.” Just what the world needs — naked bums.

Does anything manifest America’s troubled soul more than that some conservatives are defending the classified documents leaker? Geez.

Hard work today at the floating book shop. We’re clearing out the old house. Today I took a bookcase, which I hope will tidy up the apartment, as there are books piled in corners. This necessitated a rearrangement of the wares in my car — twice. I also lugged a bag with three laptops and an IPAD. Somehow I got everything home — and the old Hyundai didn’t break down despite being stuffed to the gills. My thanks to the gentleman who bought a CD on French instruction, The Day After Tomorrow (2004) on DVD, and a classical music CD; and to the young woman who purchased The Four Winds by Kristen Hannah, highly recommended by several of my patrons. Nap time.
