Welcome to 2020
Of course celebrity deaths are sad, especially of those who die young, but we tend to forget the passing of others just as important to society. From foxnews.com, edited by yours truly: 131 law enforcement officers died in the line of duty in 2019, some in car crashes and medical emergencies, others by homicide. The only good news is that it is a significant drop from 2018.
Here are highlights from another FN article, edited by yt — “Top 5 most outrageous 2020 doomsday predictions that didn’t pan out.”
The Washington Post front page story: “U.S. may warm 6 degrees F from 1990 to 2020.” It has warmed one degree.
New York Times 1989, CNN 2003: “Oil will effectively run out by 2020.” Rodney Dangerfield might have said: “You’re waaay off.”
CNN 2003, AP 2007: “By 2020, no glaciers will be left on Mt. Kilimanjaro.” Still there.
Discover magazine 2000: “A billion people will starve due to missing the tech revolution.” Global extreme poverty has fallen by about a billion people.
Reuters 1997: “By 2020, millions will die from climate change.” There has been a 95% decline in weather-related deaths in the last 100 years.
I’ll make one prediction about 2020: Politics will remain ugly and discouraging.
Leftists must be so disappointed that no Americans have been killed in the storming of the U.S. embassy in Iraq. They’re praying for a Trump Benghazi.
I didn’t expect much business, given the holiday, but it was a routine session of the floating book shop on day one of the new year. My thanks to the woman who bought From a Buick 8 by Stephen King; and to the woman who purchased three books in Russian; and to the female MTA employee, who selected The Passions of Chelsea Kane by Barbara Delinsky.
