Please tell me we’re going to get our diplomatic personnel out of Afghanistan in time.

Here’s a surprising headline from nypost.com: “Brooklyn’s white population surges as black residents exit.” Several reasons are cited in the accompanying article by Julia Marsh and Sean Conlon, two being the high cost of housing and the relocation of retirees who sell their homes at a profit.

Haiti has suffered its third earthquake since 2010, just one month after its president was assassinated. It’s also plagued by criminal gangs. Shouldn’t the U.N. be doing something to help this misbegotten country? Why not move in until its gets itself straightened out? Be of use for once.

A youtube video title posed a question I can’t believe I never googled: “What were the first and second Reichs?” Answer: the Holy Roman Empire (800–1806), which was comprised of the lands in southern Europe and dissolved during the Napoleonic Wars, and the German Empire (1871–1918), which ended with WWI and Germany in the financial ruin that paved the way for Hitler’s rise.

Despite the breeze it didn’t feel much cooler until halfway through today’s session of the floating book shop, when clouds rolled in. My thanks to the woman who donated a Danielle Steel paperback, and to the gentleman who did his customary weekend swap and buy of Russian books; and to the young woman who bought The Juror by George Dawes Green; and to the middle age one who purchased Estate Planning for Dummies and Crisis of Character: A White House Secret Service Officer Discloses His Firsthand Experience with Hillary, Bill, and How They Operate by Gary J. Byrne; and to the man who selected 50 Successful Harvard Application Essays by Staff of the Harvard Crimson; and to Bill, who jumped on Dr. Burns’ Prescription for Happiness by George Burns; and to the woman who insisted on paying for The Chameleon That Saved Noah’s Ark by Cliff Bradshaw despite giving me a bottle of coconut water, and who returned later with the donation of a first rate cook book.
