Wind in My Sales

Hopefully, the corona virus issue will play out like similar past fears and simply fade away. It has me questioning whether I should be buying food from the local Chinese bakery, which I hit two or three times a week. Researchers have found the source of the disease — a wholesale animal market in the country’s central city of Wuhan, where it jumped from animals to humans. Trouble is, a lot of people have fled the area. Time will tell if some took the affliction with them.

Sign of the times: An op-ed piece by Tiffany Jenkins at nypost.com informs that Yale’s storied course “Introduction to Art History: Renaissance to the Present” will soon be terminated. In its place will be mini-courses on art and politics, questions of gender, class and race, and the relationship of art to capitalism and climate change. On the New Haven campus the love of art now comes with a politically correct caveat. Then again, so does a lot of other stuff.

A CNN panel has drawn fire for mocking Trump supporters. Here’s a snippet of what was said: “… the credulous boomer rube demo that backs Donald Trump.” No doubt that will be used in the President’s campaign ads.

Does it mean anything, especially in terms of politics, that the ratings for this year’s Grammys were an all-time low?

Here’s an interesting headline from foxnews.com: “Vegetarian food company develops nicotine-like ‘meat patch’ to help curb cravings.” Include me out. Maybe this will be another idea I’ve smirked at that goes on to make a lot of people rich.

The breeze was light when I went out this morning to do the floating book shop, so I decided to stay put, and luck came my way, although it became a tough session physically when the wind kicked up later. I spent some time seated in the car to ward off the cold. My thanks to the gentleman who bought a travel guide in Russian, and to the woman walking her tiny dog, who asked me to hold onto a bio of Tchaikovsky in Russian until she returned; and to Lynn, who found The Power of Three: Being Enchanted Has Its Price by Constance M. Burge, the basis for the Charmed TV series; and to the woman who stocked up, taking two paperback romances, The Boleyn Inheritance by Philippa Gregory, and four novels by Anne Rice, including The Queen of the Damned; and to Ira, who chose What’s So Funny?: My Hilarious Life by Tim Conway and Still Foolin’ ’Em: Where I’ve Been, Where I’m Going, and Where the Hell Are My Keys by Billy Crystal; and to Arthur, who selected the six paperbacks of The Green Mile series by Stephen King and L.A. Dead by Stuart Woods; and to the woman who approached while I was packing up and took home Thin for Life: 10 Keys to Success from People Who Have Lost Weight and Kept It Off by Anne M. Fletcher M.S. R.D.. Business has picked up considerably from the doldrums of early January.
