Here’s the Duh! headline of the day, from nypost.com: “Minneapolis City Council alarmed by crime surge after defunding police.” And here’s one from foxnews.com that stuns despite the fact that it concerns a politician: “Washington Gov. Jay Inslee gives maggot-infested apples to wildfire victims, regrets ‘mistake.’”

The Big Ten, which has 14 teams, has caved to pressure and will have a football season. Also on the sports front: How weird is it that the U.S. Open, played annually close to Father’s Day, is now underway? It’s at Winged Foot in Mamaroneck, NY, 17 miles from Manhattan. It’s one of the hardest courses in the world. I’m hoping for scores barely above par, which may be whistling in the dark given the incredible skills of modern golfers.

Not much action at the floating book shop today. My thanks to Ira, who bought an English-Italian dictionary, and to the woman who purchased a hardcover in Russian; and to the one who did the same and also selected a cook book.

There’s plenty of other news out there — wildfires, a hurricane, rioting, increased crime, politics as usual — but it all seems stale, so I’ll finish with someone who always put a smile on my face and whose shenanigans I miss.
