Words & Actions
Trivia: What’s unusual about the word “facetious”? Answer below.
Sometimes it seems Alan Dershowitz is the only liberal American Jew defending Israel. Here’s the cover of his latest book:
Headline from foxnews.com: “Chicago’s bloody Labor Day weekend sees at least 35 shot, 7 of them killed.” Where is the outrage?
Another FN headline: “ISIS using booby-trapped bovines to go after enemies in Iraq.” Fiends will be fiends.
Facetious contains all five vowels in order. There are several other words that share that oddity. Only one is fairly common — abstemious, which is defined in Merriam-Webster as “marked by restraint especially in the eating of food or drinking of alcohol.” I came upon this bit of trivia in the novel I’m currently reading, Elizabeth Appleton by John O’Hara.
Unable to land a parking spot even remotely near my usual book nook, I took the show to an alternate site where I was able to set up the display right beside my car. My thanks to the woman who bought a book in Russian, and to the one who did a one-for-one swap of said.
