Words & Numbers
Trump, like Biden, received no bounce from the convention, although he is gaining ground in the polls. The election cycle continues to be weird, but I can’t imagine the undecided will vote in significant numbers for Biden. I don’t expect a landslide, as the country seems at an almost 50–50 divide, but I believe the president will win. Only an unforeseen catastrophe or constant gaffs — real, not those the mainstream media and Dems conjure — will derail him.
Interesting headline from foxnews.com: “Kenosha sees 175 arrested during civil unrest so far; 102 had addresses listed outside city…” And one that seems a repeat: “At least 10 people killed, 45 wounded in Chicago shootings over the weekend.” NYC needs to pick up the pace — five killed, a dozen or so wounded.
In an interview on Fox, actor Dean Cain dubbed NYC “Land of the Flee.” Kudos, sir.
Dave, a middle age chef laid off since March from his job at a middling Manhattan hotel, related some interesting stuff about his past. He lived in Germany for two years as a young man. He said any foreigner not carrying his/her passport faced big trouble. One night he and two friends were drinking and listening to loud music. Someone called the cops. One gave them the third degree while the other pointed a machine gun at them. Fortunately, their paperwork was in order. While being driven to his wife’s hometown in Russia, he noted that his brother in law had several large bills separated beside him on the front seat. There were no tolls. They were used to pay off cops who otherwise might have hassled them. What would happen to people in those lands who protested about such abuse?
All the floating book shop’s sales today were of Russian matter. My thanks to Wolf, who bought seven hardcovers, and to the old-timer who purchased two; and to Tatianna, who overcompensated me for a Russia-Italian dictionary and a novel; and to the woman who donated a handful of books, one in English; and to Mike, who delivered several titles in English; and to the home attendant of the Brainiac brothers, whose charges sent two non-fiction beauties.
