Yes We Can Can
RIP singer Bonnie Pointer, 69, one of four sisters that made up the group that had millions groovin’ to Yes We Can Can, which hit #11 on the Billboard chart in 1973. She went solo in 1978 and released Heaven Must Have Sent You, which also reached #11. She cut four solo albums. As part of the group she received three Grammy nominations, winning Best Country Vocal Performance by a Duo or Group for Fairytale, which hit #13. She reunited for tours with her sisters a couple of times through the years. Well done, madam. Thank you.
These days weird sexual practices are common knowledge. Here’s a nypost.com headline that begs the question — What was he thinking?: “Indian man undergoes surgery after inserting phone charger into penis.”… Speaking of weird sexual practices, here’s my favorite headline of the day: “Make Prince Andrew sing.” Indeed, but guard him closely… In an article at foxnews.com, former acting Director of National Intelligence Richard Grenell said: “… it no longer is Republicans and Democrats pushing against each other to create good policy. It’s a fight between Washington and the rest of America.” Well put, but hardly news. DC is a swamp of which many approve, many deplore, and which many view as business as usual among the lowest form of life… Also from FN, Donald Trump Jr. asks: “Will those same anti-cop Dems call for their security details to be cut?” Kudos, sir… Here’s an unsurprising FN headline that will not incite protests: “Chicago sees its deadliest day in 60 years with 18 murders in 24 hours.” Geez… Also from FN, Victor David Hansen had this to say: “A lot of this is a psychological mechanism of wealthy, privileged — white people, especially, but also wealthy and privileged minorities — of rhetorical penance so they don’t have to … rub shoulders with people they champion. It’s very common in history.”
Here’s an excerpt from an NYP article by Betsy McCaughey: “Public-health academics from the University of Washington, which created the virus-forecasting model widely used by governors and the president’s task force, are circulating a public letter declaring the marches a higher priority than containing the virus.”
From FN, a story that manifests government in a nutshell, edited by yours truly: The last person to receive a Civil War-era pension died in North Carolina last week. Irene Triplett was 90. Her father, Moses Triplett, was a confederate soldier who deserted in 1863 and joined Union forces the following year. He married Irene’s mother in 1924 when he was 78 and she 28. Mose Triplett was 83 when his daughter was born. It was common for young women to marry elderly men to get a guaranteed lifetime widow’s pension. Children of veterans also received them. That’ll knock a few bucks off the $20+ trillion deficit. Is this the only instance of ridiculous largess? Wanna buy a bridge?
Today I had a brief conversation with a gentleman who’s been driving a city bus for 21 years. I’d noticed lately that people were boarding from the side. The ride is currently free, unlike the subway, and the driver is protected by a plastic sheet.
The novella on which I’m working remains stubborn. I’ve completed another run through it and still don’t think it’s ready to be uploaded to Amazon for a proof copy. I’ll begin again tomorrow. Fortunately, it takes only three sessions to get through.
