RIP Tim McCarver, 81, all-star catcher and ace color analyst. Born in Memphis, he was drafted by St. Louis in 1959 and received the proverbial cup of coffee at 17, getting 24 at-bats. He became the full-time catcher in ‘63. He was a member of the World Series champions of ’64 and ’67. He had the game-winning homer in Game Five of the Fall Classic vs. the Yankees in ’64. A two-time all-star, he scored the winning run in the ’66 game. That season he became the first catcher to lead the National League in triples, 13. In ’67 he finished second to teammate Orlando Cepeda in the NL MVP voting. He also had two stints with the Phillies, another with the Cards, and one each with the Expos and Red Sox. He caught no-hitters by Rick Wise of the Phils and Bill Stoneman of Montreal. Although he retired in ’79, he returned briefly in ’80, becoming one of those rare players to take the field in four decades. He is a member of the Cardinals Hall of Fame. Overall, he had 97 homers and batted .271. He was outstanding in the broadcast booth, his analysis spot on and his reminincises fun. When working for the Mets, he brought out the best in Ralph Kiner. He won three Emmys for Sports Event Analyst, and is a member of the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame. Well done, sir. Thank you. Facts from Wiki, photo from Google Images:

I doubt there will be a more amusing headline in today’s news than this from nypost.com: “UFO shot down by $400K US missile may have been a $12 hobby balloon: report.” Bucks for bang.

Unsurprising NYP headline: “NYC’s black victims rise dramatically after criminal-justice reforms.” Doesn’t that mean the reforms are racist? Headline to foxnews.com editorial: “Do Black victims matter?”

Headline from newsmax.com: “UK Program: Tolkien Works Pave a Path to Right-Wing Extremism.” According to the accompanying article by Brian Pfail, “… authors like J.R.R. Tolkien, George Orwell, and C.S. Lewis can radicalize readers…” Memo to censors: A twisted mind is liable to turn anything into a cause.

Headline from foxnews.com, news the mainstream media will not likely cover: “Elderly Florida woman shoots armed intruder dead at 3 am: ‘Decisive action stopped the threat’.”

The floating book shop was rained out today, which allowed me to finish my tax return, which was less tortuous this year. I’m receiving a return from the Feds for the first time in years. I have no idea why. I put most of it toward next year’s return, which will include the two IRA distributions I was forced to take. I paid the Turbo Tax fee with money from the return. I didn’t have to use my credit card. Yay, team!
